TMS Students Join in Fight Against Slavery

For the third time Talawanda Middle School has partnered with the International Justice Mission and the Loose Change to Loosen Chains Campaign to raise money to free modern day slaves. When eighth grade students visited the National Underground Freedom Center in early May, they learned that nearly 27 million people are enslaved today, and that many people can be rescued from slavery for as little as $15. Like William Willberforce, believing that one person can make a difference, TMS students joined together to raise $1575.49 in loose change. Pictured here are Jennifer Schuppie, Mandelyn Schulte, Mariah Davis. Special thanks to the Lebanon Citizens National Bank for their help in counting the change and to the community members who contributed to the matching gift.

The Big Read Begins March 1st

Funded by a national grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, this project, called The Big Read, is an attempt to restore literacy to the heart of our culture.

The Big Read will kickoff with an opening ceremony at the Community Arts Center at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 1st. Not only will the national director of The Big Read be there, but you'll also hear Dewey Halverson (11 time Iditarod musher from Alaska) and Oxford's mayor (proclaiming it Big Read Month). TMS students have created the artwork that will be on display throughout the month of March.

Dewey Halverson will be at TMS on Monday, March 2. Then, throughout the week, he will visit other area schools that are participating in The Big Read. We are also able to bring this experienced musher to our district elementary schools as well.

Julia and Charles from TMS participate in WMUB's radio forum on literary reading as part of The Big Read
