Following her Talawanda successes, Linda continued her field hockey career at Miami University earning another 4 varsity letters, along with a B.S. in Science(’82) and a M.A. in Teaching(’90). While at Miami, she was an important part of the Redskin State Championship team that qualified for the National Championship Tournament, finishing in the top 12. Selected as a co-captain on the 1981 team, she was recognized as one of eight Miami athletes as an Alumni Scholar Athlete in April of 1982. Linda closed out her playing career with an USA Olympic team tryout later that year.
After Miami, Linda excelled in her role as science teacher at Wilson Junior High in Hamilton, and as one of the top field hockey officials in the state from 1984-97. An Ohio Teacher of the Year nominee in 1996, Linda was a pioneer in science education with the development of a curriculum where students would do a “lab-a-day” to experience science discovery daily. She was also recognized in 1996 by the Ohio High School Athletic Association as one of the top field hockey officials in the state working the state semi-final contest.
Linda battled cancer for several years before dying in March of 1999. She is remembered by many in the words of her field hockey coach at Miami University Lil Fesperman who said, “ Linda kept so many things in perspective. She could brighten a room so easily. There are not a large number of athletes who go on to play Division I sports in college; Linda worked hard and was a great player and teammate for us. She even officiated high school games after her graduation. Linda will always be special and will always be remembered. She is the type of person that a coach is always proud to have known.”
