The Butler County basketball seasons of 1939 -’40, and 1940
- ‘41, were dominated by Hanover High School. The team was
led by its star player, a man we honor tonight, Ed Fowler.
During that two year period, Hanover had 45 wins against
only 6 losses under the direction of Coach Ed Cinniger. At
one point, the team had a string of 27 consecutive wins,
and Ed Fowler was the main force behind this success that
produced two straight Butler County and Southwestern Ohio
district championships.
In those days, a 20 point game was rare for high school
basketball players. Fowler did it regularly. In his senior
year during the quarter finals of the state tournament, he
tossed in 31 points, just two points shy of the state
record as Hanover lost to Confield, the night before Fowler
had 20 points in the opening game of the state tournament.
Twice, Ed was a first team all Butler County selection. His
junior year, he was Honorable Mention all state and in his
senior season, he was a first team all state selection. He
was truly an all time Butler County great!
