John began his coaching career in 1951, at Stewart High School, as an assistant football and baseball coach. He went on in 1953 through 1956, as head coach in football and track to lead teams to two Southwestern League championships in football, and two Butler County Track championships.

The “tradition” of Talawanda High School athletics began in 1956, when John Trump became the first football and track coach of the new high school.

Coach Trump’s five year reign as head track coach resulted in five league championships. In his five years as head football coach, John led the Braves to a 36 win, 11 loss record. His 1957 team, (undefeated, untied), was the first Talawanda High School team to be named at the state level, and continues to be a record holding team for allowing the fewest number of points in a total season (32). John’s football teams achieved three league championships, and were co-champions for two years.

John Trump not only began the Talawanda “tradition” of athletic competition, but continues to reign as the coach with the highest winning percentage, (.766), in the history of Talawanda football.
