Glenn “Duke” Winkler graduated from Hanover School in 1956. During his four years of high school at Hanover, “Duke” participated in cross country, volleyball, baseball, and basketball. Although “Duke” received many accolades for outstanding performances in cross country and volleyball, he is most remembered for his many honors attained in basketball.

“Duke” Winkler first started for the Hanover varsity team as a freshman in the 1953 county tournament game. As a sophomore starter for Hanover, he finished that season with a 19.7 average. This was the second highest scoring mark in Butler County. During his junior year, “Duke” was the leading scorer in Butler County, with a 27.9 point average, and also the Butler County League leader, with a 30.4 average. The “Dandy Duke” continued his outstanding career by winning the Butler County Scoring title and Butler County League scoring title again during his senior year.

Glenn “Duke” Winkler has been recognized as a member of the All-time, All-Butler County Basketball team; the 1956 Cincinnati Post All-Star Butler County Team; the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame, and now the Talawanda Athletic Hall of Fame.
