While Steve's basketball teams excelled on the court, Steve was also well known for his compassion as a coach and teacher dealing with young people. He wanted them to succeed, but he also wanted to make sure they had a positive experience while doing it.
During his 11 years as the varsity boys basketball coach at Talawanda from 1978 through 1989, Steve compiled a record of 145-91, a .614 winning percentage that included four Mid-Miami League championships and a memorable run of 50-18 through three seasons from the fall of 1980 through the spring of 1983.
That era produced Talawanda's best team ever, the 21-4 contingent in 1982-83 that captured the MML title and won the Division I district championship before losing to state-bound Middletown in the regional semifinals.
Steve's coaching career included stops at the boys programs at Miamisburg and Edgewood as well as the girls program at Fairfield High. It included 232 victories over 19.5 seasons, more than 100 wins in the always-competitive MML, a trip to the district finals at Edgewood in 1995 and a regional berth at Fairfield in 2002.
Through it all, Steve retained the same positive demeanor that made him a gentleman on and off the court, in victory and defeat.
He passed away of a fatal long-term illness at the age of 52 in April 2004, leaving behind a family - wife Pam and daughters Carey, Kelley and Amy - that are a first class legacy to the type of individual Steve Termeer was.
Tonight we recognize Steve Termeer for his coaching success, his commitment to excellence, and welcome him into the 8th class of the Talawanda Athletic Hall of Fame!
