From 1985 through 2001, Chris held the Talawanda school records in the 1600 (4:14.1) and 800 (1:57) meter runs as well as 7 relay records. In 2001, state champion Jesse Rhodenbaugh erased the 1600, 800 and three of the relay records, but Chris was the dominant force on four relay records that still stand. During his Talawanda career, the Braves won four MML track titles and three cross country titles.
In the fall of his junior year, he had a potentially career ending injury, but through determination and rehabilitation, he exploded back on the track scene the next spring. After graduation, Chris competed at the division I level for Arizona State and Ball State earning a trip to the national finals with the Ball State cross country team in 1989.
In his nomination, longtime Talawanda cross country and track coach Dale Plank stated, “Chris was the most influential athlete I have coached in 33 years. He drew other kids to cross country and track like a magnet. And once he had drawn them in, he built up their confidence through constant encouragement. He seldom talked of his own successes, instead turning his attention to their accomplishments. He was also extremely unselfish, often sacrificing personal success to advance the goals of relay teams.”
Chris now resides with his family in Petaluma, California where he runs his own music management company. He has two sons, Gareth and Luke.
Tonight we recognize Chris Webb for his athletic achievements, his commitment to excellence, and welcome him into the 8th class of the Talawanda Athletic Hall of Fame!
