Last Basketball Game in Old THS
On Friday, February 17, 2012 Talawanda Boy’s Basketball team will host the Ross Rams, on their Senior Night, in the last HOME basketball game at the existing Talawanda High School.
Talawanda High School has been in existence since 1959, and has played many great girl’s and boy’s basketball games, and has seen great student athletes and coaches cross its court throughout the years.
On Friday, February 17th, we will close the doors to this gymnasium and say goodbye to all those great memories we have from a facility that has stood the test of time, and been a big part of so many great memories for coaches, athletes, and especially our community.
We are calling on all past coaches, players, game personnel, and our great fans to come to the gym on the 17th to help us send our team, and the gym, out on a great note.
Next season we open a whole new chapter in the history of our District as we move into a brand new high school, and as much as we are looking forward to this transition, it’s equally as important to recognize and remember all those that have made this gym so special!
So if you are a former coach, player, game personnel, or one of our long time loyal fans we WANT to see you on Friday, February 17th at 7:30pm as our boy’s take on the Ross Rams. We encourage you to wear your old spirit wear as you take a trip down memory land, and help us celebrate the end of this chapter.

THS Awarded Ohio Department of Natural Resources Grant

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) recently awarded a $500.00 Wild School grant to support Environmental Science projects at Talawanda High School. THS science teacher Mrs. Adriane Ruther was trained in Project Wild in 2003. Project Wild encourages teachers to use the outdoor area at any school as an educational tool. “The current school is so constrained. There is no place to explore nature. As soon as we saw the new THS site, we knew we had a beautiful resource for student exploration.” says Ruther. The new THS property encompasses 147 acres with wetlands, woods, prairie and cropland to be studied by students.
The funds will be used to purchase a GPS device that will allow students to explore and mark critical natural features and return to the same spot for future study. The funding will also purchase Honeysuckle Poppers™, a tool to battle invasive bush honeysuckle. Chris Grenner from Mr. Honeysuckle LTD in Hamilton matched the grant funds and provided additional equipment and training so that students could safely manage the natural areas of the new school.
Grenner invented the Honeysuckle Popper to more easily lift the bushes out of the ground without using pesticides. “Left unchecked, they will grow and reproduce right under your nose. They will shade out trees, grass, other bushes, and anything else you may want to grow. It is important that young people learn to manage this plant.” Says Grenner.
“This is another example of the creative things that Talawanda teachers do everyday.” Says Talawanda High School Principal Vicki Brunn. “It is awesome when teachers provide opportunities for our students to collaborate with members of the community to make a difference.”
