Marshall Elementary School
“Where Learning and Community Come Together”

Dear Marshall Families,

The end of the school year is near and with that we begin to experience an increase in our students’ participation in school and non-school activities. During this time, continue your support of the daily instructional activities by encouraging your child to stay focused in class and to complete assignments both at school and at home. Learning is an ongoing process that doesn’t end.

The remainder of the year is a busy time and brings with it several annual programs and special events.

During the week of May 12, all Talawanda students in grades one to five will participate in Science Days at Miami. Each day a different grade level will take a trip to Miami in order to complete various experiments and activities in the Miami Science Labs. These days should prove to be exciting and educational.

Our fifth grade students will begin their transition to middle school with Orientation on May 13 and an in-school activity day with Kramer, Bogan, and the 6th and 7th grade students on June 3.

The annual Marshall Mayfest is scheduled for May 16 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. This activity brings the Marshall community together for some family fun. The final family event for this year will be the Marshall Picnic on June 4 from 11:00 to 1:30 – please refer to the flyer sent home earlier for specific times for each grade level. The Student Recognition Program will precede the picnic at 10:30 AM in the gym.

As I mentioned earlier, the remainder of the year is a busy time. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. As a reminder the last day of school will be June 5.

Sincerely,

Mr. Chad Hinton Principal

Lunchtime Procedures
Over the past few months, some questions have been asked about our lunchtime procedures. With students coming to lunch from recess we had experienced an increase in the noise level in the cafeteria and needed to find some way to calm students down so we could manage the cafeteria, keep students safe, and ensure that students were finishing their lunch. We always expected students to come in from recess quietly but this was not always being followed so in January we modified the expectation. Students go to recess for twenty minutes. After twenty minutes students hear a whistle to line up and at that time we ask for voices to be silent for the next ten minutes. It takes anywhere from three to five minutes for students to line up and walk into the building therefore voices are suppose to be silent for five to seven minutes in the cafeteria – this allows students time to calm down, go through the lunch line, and begin eating their lunch. For the next 15 minutes students can talk quietly at their tables. For the last five minutes, we again ask for voices to be silent while the next group transitions into the cafeteria and so students can focus on finishing their lunch. I hope this answers some of the questions you may have. If you have other questions or comments, please feel free to contact Mr. Hinton.
