Bogan's Positive Behavior Support

Bogan Elementary School is committed to promoting a positive school environment that fosters student success, both academically and behaviorally. In order to help enhance these efforts, Bogan has recently adopted a new Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Handbook.

Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a framework for a proactive approach to encouraging positive behaviors in all students. Rather than focusing on inappropriate school behaviors as they occur, PBS concentrates on proactively teaching and reinforcing expected, positive behaviors of students throughout the various settings of the school environment. Common behavioral expectations that are relevant for all students in all school settings and all situations are taught consistently and explicitly by teachers and staff. Students who engage in these appropriate school behaviors receive systematic, frequent, and specific recognition.

At Bogan Elementary, positive and appropriate student behaviors will be taught and acknowledged using the guidelines established in the Bogan PBS Handbook. The three main expectations that are taught to students are:

  1. I will respect myself.
  2. I will respect others.
  3. I will respect my school.

These expectations take on different forms depending on the various settings in the school. For example, respecting myself may look different in the cafeteria than it does in the classroom setting. Students are taught how each of these expectations look in the many different settings encountered throughout a school day and building.

When students are observed displaying these appropriate behaviors (either by an adult or another student), they are reinforced through a pre-established acknowledgment system. Students will receive immediate recognition for their good behaviors by receiving specific verbal praise and a Praise Note that they can take to the office. These Praise Notes are then entered into a weekly drawing for a prize. Bogan students will also receive monthly and quarterly recognition by having their picture placed on the Bogan website or Bulletin Board or by participating in a quarterly “special lunch” with Bogan’s Guidance Counselor.

By teaching and acknowledging appropriate school behaviors, we aim to create a positive school environment that encourages academic and behavioral excellence for all of our students.

For more specific information on Bogan’s approach to PBS, please refer to the Bogan PBS Handbook (available on this website). Also, feel free to contact Teresa Woodin (Principal) or Marcie Turner (School Psychologist).
